01 / BEFORE YOU SIZE EQUIPMENT

Your pool operates as one connected system.

The pump does not work by itself. It must move the right amount of water through the plumbing, filter, heater and sanitation equipment without exceeding the limits of any component.

THE BASIC IDEA

Move enough water to operate the pool properly—without moving more than the system can handle.

A larger motor is not automatically better. An oversized pump can create excess velocity, noise and pressure while consuming more energy. An undersized pump may struggle to circulate, heat or clean the pool effectively.

01 / GPM

Flow rate

How much water moves through the system.

Flow rate is measured in gallons per minute, or GPM. Filters, heaters, salt cells and water features all have operating-flow requirements or maximum ratings.

02 / RESISTANCE

Total dynamic head

How difficult it is for the pump to move that water.

Pipe length, diameter, fittings, elevation and equipment create resistance. As resistance increases, the same pump produces less flow.

03 / CIRCULATION

Turnover

A planning measure—not a pump size by itself.

Turnover estimates how long it takes to move a volume equal to the pool’s water capacity. It helps establish a planning-flow range but does not prove that every area of the pool circulates equally.

04 / THE PATH

Plumbing size

The pipe establishes a practical flow boundary.

Smaller plumbing creates more resistance at higher flow. Long runs, numerous fittings and equipment positioned above the pool also make pump selection more demanding.

05 / THE SYSTEM

Equipment limits

Every component must support the intended flow.

A pump may be capable of producing more water flow than a filter, heater or sanitizer should receive. The safest working range respects the most restrictive component.

06 / THE CONTROL

Variable speed

Adjust flow to suit different operating tasks.

Lower speeds can support everyday filtration efficiently, while higher programmed speeds can serve heating, cleaning or water features when additional flow is required.

Pool dimensions estimate volume. Plumbing and equipment location help identify resistance. Features establish additional flow demands. The result combines those answers into a general equipment range instead of relying on horsepower alone.

Size by flow—not horsepower alone.

Horsepower is familiar, but it does not describe how a pump performs against the resistance created by plumbing, filters, heaters and fittings.

Dimensions establish an estimated water volume and a baseline circulation requirement.

The selector shows a practical residential circulation range in gallons per minute—not a mandatory operating schedule.

Pipe diameter, distance, elevation and equipment affect the flow a pump can actually produce.

04 / EQUIPMENT BASICS

Understand the recommendation.

Pump class

A general horsepower class is shown for easier shopping, but the required flow at the expected total dynamic head remains the deciding specification. Variable-speed pumps provide more adjustment when actual system resistance differs from the estimate.

Sand-filter diameter

A larger tank provides more filtration area and usually allows longer cycles between backwashing. The filter’s rated flow must remain above the intended system flow.

Cartridge-filter area

Cartridge filters are described by square feet of effective filtration area. Oversizing generally increases dirt capacity and extends the time between cleanings.

Heater capacity

BTU input affects warm-up time. Pool volume, temperature rise, cover use, wind and outdoor temperature all influence real heating performance.

Salt-system capacity

The selector intentionally recommends a capacity above the estimated pool volume. Cold water, heavy use and sunlight can all change chlorine demand.

When to request a review

Request a hydraulic review for long plumbing runs, elevated equipment, attached spas, large water features, solar systems or unclear existing plumbing.
